ABOUT US

Elmarie Grendele

Optometrist

B. Tech Optometry (University of Johannesburg)

Elmarie qualified at the University of Johannesburg and with her family moved to Durban to enjoy the wonderful outdoor family lifestyle that it offers. With a keen interest in children’s vision, Elmarie brings her vast experience, enthusiasm for what we do, as well as her care and understanding (as a mother herself) to the practice. Her love for optometry extends to adult eye care, with comprehensive detailed adult optometric assessments adding to the binocular visual assessment work that she does.

Asma Khatib

Optometrist

B. Optom - Diagnostics (UKZN)

Asma Khatib graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2021. She has worked with us since her student days and manages most of our accessibility training of tech devices (helping those with low vision to make use of screen adaptations and voice commands) in the practice. With a keen interest in various aspects of clinical work, Asma will be furthering her studies in some of the more specialised aspects of vision care. Asma enjoys travelling the world and spending quality time with her family and is a valued member of the practice.

Joanne Kalil

Optometrist

B. Optom. (RAU) Post.Grad.Dip.Adv.Clin. Optometry (Melbourne)

After having qualified as an Optometrist at the Rand Afrikaans University and completed post graduate studies through the University of Melbourne, Joanne moved to Durban in 2001 and established the practice soon after. Initially the primary focus was assisting those with low vision, but with time children's binocular vision assessments and general optometry became part of the practice. Joanne brings over 23 years’ experience to the practice and enjoys the input of her colleagues Elmarie, Ty and Asma in contributing to the overall care of those who entrust us with their eye care.

Ty Lahner

Optometrist

B. Optom - Diagnostics (UKZN)

Ty qualified with his Bachelor of Optometry (Diagnostics) at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal and joined the practice soon after.

In the years since then, Ty has enjoyed the varied challenges of both binocular visual assessments and the low vision work we do at the practice. As well as this (having experienced the benefits of contact lens wear as a surf photographer himself) Ty is ideally suited to teaching even our younger patients how to manage and care for their contact lenses.
